TACT and Peterborough City Council have entered into an innovative and ground-breaking partnership that will improve outcomes for children and young people in care and on the edge of care.

The new permanency service begun on 1st April 2017 with TACT delivering fostering and adoption services on behalf of Peterborough City Council. The partnership is the first arrangement of its kind and is expected to deliver savings of £1m a year once fully established.

The new service will reduce the council’s reliance on higher cost independent fostering and residential placements as well as provide improved training and 24/7 support to all carers, adopters and relatives looking after children who come into care in Peterborough.

TACT is the UK’s largest fostering and adoption charity and has an extensive track record and over 20 years’ experience in delivering positive outcomes for children and young people in care.

Councillor Sam Smith, cabinet member for Peterborough Children’s Service, said:

“We believe that this new partnership will enable us to recruit and retain more local foster carer through an improved support network that TACT will deliver. This will lead to more local longer-term foster placements for Peterborough children and young people.”

The service also aims to increase the number of city-based foster carers looking after young people with more challenging care needs. As such TACT are starting to recruit carers immediately.

Staff working as part of the permanency service will be based at city council offices and overseen by a joint board that includes senior staff from the council and TACT. The partnership, which is to last 10 years, will also provide an opportunity for Peterborough City Council to develop new services for children and young people, including support for those returning home from care.
